Box 4, Hornby Island, B.C., Canada VOR 1Z0 Home Phone (250) 335‑2773 Born: 1947, Toronto, Ontario CEDAR WALLACECedar Wallace is a fibre artist and papermaker from Hornby Island, British Columbia who exhibits her work across Canada. She teaches basketry, feltmaking and papermaking throughout the Vancouver Island area. Her focus has primarily been working with felt, gourds, paper and basketry. DESCRIPTION OF CURRENT WORKNon-functional objects which utilize natural West Coast fibres (i.e. cedar bark, gourds, bamboo, daphne) with other fibre art forms such as papermaking, basketry and felting. Craft techniques are used separately, combined and/or extended to construct smallscale intimate relic‑like objects which refer to historical traditions, but are simultaneously contemporary in their eclectic use of materials and consequent signification. Bones, gourds, shells, bamboo, copper wire, waxen linen thread, stones and felt are used to evoke reverence for nature's cyclic regeneration. Each assemblage is a spontaneous and intuitive response to the particulars of the elements involved. Each is, an icon of sorts, a homage to a particular site or beast or some similar aspect of nature. The work proceeds from the artist's locale and from the pleasure to be found in the materials and the detailed construction. WORKSHOP LEADER & LECTURES
